Suspect in Monroe police shooting dies

The suspect in a police-involved shooting in Monroe has died.
Simba Lion, 40, had been in critical condition at Mercy Health St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo since the Nov. 19 incident. Michigan State Police said on Twitter that he died over the weekend.
“The cause of death is unknown at this time,” the Monday afternoon tweet reads. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Lt. Brian Oleksyk with the Michigan State Police First District, which is handling the investigation, declined to release any further information, including the actual date of Mr. Lion’s death. He also could not say when any additional information about the case, including the names of the officers injured, would be released.
The hospital had no information on Mr. Lion, and the Lucas County Coroner’s Office could not be reached for comment.
Two Monroe police officers were shot while responding to a report of an assault by an armed man at the Washington Arms Apartments in the 700 block of Washington Street.
The lieutenant previously said Mr. Lion and a maintenance worker got into a fight and both called 911. Two Monroe police officers responded about 9 a.m. and attempted to make contact with the man in the hallway of the complex, but Mr. Lion retreated into his apartment. When the officers approached the apartment, he shot them both in the leg, police said.
At some point, two more Monroe officers arrived, and the man was shot multiple times, according to police. Details about the shootout have not been released.
