Toledo museum exhibit to feature Japanese artist

The Toledo Museum of Art is bringing an installation by a world renowned Japanese artist to its museum this winter.

Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her interactive, large-scale installations that use lights, mirrors and other stimulations to offer the idea of infinite space through virtual reality experiences.

Yayoi Kusama: Fireflies on the Water will be installed in the Canaday Gallery from Dec. 14 through April 26.

Kusama, who turned 90 this year, has experience a seven-decade career in which she has created almost a dozen infinity mirror installations, as well as paintings, sculptures, and other interactive art.

Visitors will be permitted to spend 60 seconds alone in the room to experience the piece. Non-members will be charged $5 to experience the piece, which is free to members. Tickets will be available for pre-order to some membership levels starting Nov. 11, and to all membership levels Nov. 18. The general public can purchase tickets on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2.

The piece was loaned to TMA by the Whitney Museum of Art.
