Big Ten timeline: Every recent twist in the 2020 season story

Since Saturday morning, there have been several twists and turns as the Big Ten’s 2020 fall season heads toward an anticipated cancellation or postponement.

Here is a blow-by-blow account of what has happened. 

■ Saturday, 11:15 a.m.: Shortly after the Mid-American Conference announced it will postpone fall sports, national news reports surface saying the Big Ten presidents will meet the same day, causing mass speculation the Big Ten will be next. The same day, the Big Ten says its teams cannot practice in full pads until further notice.

■ Saturday afternoon: The Big Ten presidents meet, but no vote on the season is conducted.

■ Sunday evening: ESPN reports presidents of Big Ten universities are ready to “pull the plug” on the fall sports season, leading to a conference call between Power 5 commissioners to discuss the possibility of not playing football in the fall.

■ Monday, 12:01 a.m.: College football players from across the country united in an attempt to save their season and ensure they will no longer be left out of the sport’s biggest decisions. Several players tweet a graphic with their platform for the season.

■ Monday, 9 a.m.: Sports radio host Dan Patrick says on his show the Big Ten and the Pac-12 will cancel seasons Tuesday. He says the Big Ten schools voted 12-2 to cancel, with Iowa and Nebraska voting to play.

DP was told an hour ago that the Big 10 and Pac 12 will cancel their football seasons tomorrow... The ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence.. And the SEC is trying to get teams to join them for a season.

■ Monday, 10:30 a.m.: Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) drafts a letter he plans to send to Big Ten presidents with reasons why he believes college football should be played.

■ Monday, 11:55 a.m.: Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh released a statement through a program spokesman, saying he believes a college football season is possible given the current data.

■ Monday, 12:52 a.m.: The Detroit Free Press reports the Big Ten 2020 season has been canceled.

■ Monday, 1 p.m.: Big Ten spokesperson texts national outlets to say a vote has not been conducted by Big Ten presidents and chancellors.

■ Monday, 1:20 p.m.: President Trump weighs in, tweeting, "The student-athletes have been working too hard for their season to be cancelled," and later tweeting, “Play College Football!”

■ Monday, 2:49 p.m.: Nebraska coach Scott Frost says his team is prepared to look at “other options” if it cannot play in the Big Ten.
