The number of new coronavirus cases in Lucas County and across the state continues to climb.

Locally, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department reported 188 new cases over the weekend, bringing the total number of confirmed and probable cases to 5,222.

Gov. Mike DeWine said Friday that the county has the second highest incidence of cases in the state over the past two weeks, with nearly 190 cases per 100,000 residents. Because of this, the county is listed as red under the Ohio Public Health Advisory System, which is indicative of very high exposure and spread.

The health department also reported five new deaths in Lucas County, although it said only two occurred in the past several weeks since investigations into the cause of death can cause data to lag significantly.

The Wood County Health Department reported 46 new cases since Friday, bringing its total number of confirmed and probable cases up to 1,014.

Statewide, there were 883 reported cases over the past 24 hours, down from the 21-day average of 1,217 new cases a day. The state had previously reported 879 new cases on Sunday and 1,294 new cases on Saturday.

Sunday, the state passed the benchmark of 100,000 total cases since the onset of the pandemic. With Monday’s update, there are now 101,731 reported cases in Ohio.
