Shoop’s deal is set to pay him a base salary of $450,000 for the first year. That figure jumps to $550,000 in the second year of his contract.

Jean-Mary will make a base salary of $415,000 in the upcoming year. In the second year of his contract, that base salary will increase to $450,000.

The end date of both Shoop and Jean-Mary’s contracts is Jan. 10, 2022.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh currently has two years remaining on his seven-year deal, which is set to expire three days after the final game in the 2021 season. According to Harbaugh’s contract, he and the university have until Dec. 1, 2021, to “indicate whether they have a mutual interest in negotiating an extension of this Agreement.”

According to the memos of understanding for Jean-Mary and Shoop, both coaches would owe a buyout worth 100 percent of their current annual base salary if they choose to leave Michigan before the end of their contracts.

Neither coach will be eligible for annual merit increases, but both will be given standard benefits, be eligible for the car dealer program via the athletic department, and will be eligible in the bowl bonus plan.

Michigan announced last week Shoop and Jean-Mary were filling the two open coaching vacancies left by Chris Partridge and Anthony Campanile. Partridge was with the program for five years, and was the special teams coordinator and safeties coach. He left Jan. 2 to become the defensive coordinator at Mississippi. Campanile departed the program to become an assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins.

Shoop spent the last two seasons as Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator. Before that, he served as Tennessee’s defensive coordinator (2016 and 2017) on Butch Jones’ staff. He also worked for James Franklin as a defensive coordinator and safeties coach at both Penn State (2014 and 2015) and Vanderbilt (2011 to 2013). Shoop will replace Partridge as safeties coach.

Jean-Mary has spent the last 10 seasons on the defensive staffs of Charlie Strong. Most recently he served as the defensive coordinator at South Florida from 2017 to 2019. Prior to that, he was a linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas (2014 and 2016), and a linebackers coach at Louisville (2010 to 2013). He will coach the linebackers at Michigan.

2024 schedule addition

The University of Michigan also announced the addition of Fresno State to the 2024 football schedule. The Wolverines will open the season against the Bulldogs on Aug. 31, 2024, at home. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

As things stand right now, Michigan still has to schedule one remaining opponent and has three open weeks to do so: Sept. 14, Sept. 21, or Oct. 12.
