Swimming roundup: St. Francis, St. Ursula rule in pool

FREMONT — Juniors Scotty Buff of St. Francis de Sales and Molly Dynda of St. Ursula each won two individual races and were part of two winning relays to lead their respective teams to the boys and girls championships in last Saturday’s Three Rivers Athletic Conference swimming and diving meet at the Fremont Ross High School Natatorium.

St. Francis’ Knights easily captured their ninth straight TRAC team title with 721 points. Fremont Ross was runner-up at 414.5, and Findlay was third at 408.

St. Ursula’s Arrows took the girls crown with 656 points to 458 for second-place Ross. Notre Dame was third at 409.

Buff won the 200-yard freestyle event in 1 minute and 46.14 seconds and took first in the 100 butterfly in 51.17 seconds. Buff also swam a leg on the Knights’ winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Junior teammate John Burnard won the 200 individual medley (2:02.87) and the 500 freestyle (4:50.97).

St. Francis also got race wins from seniors Brady Ireland (50 freestyle, 21.92) and Patrick Heldreth (100 freestyle, 48.43), and from junior Tristan Lee (100 backstroke, 52.89). Ireland also swam on all three of the Knights’ winning relay efforts, and Heldreth and Lee were part of two relay victories.

Dynda won the 50 freestyle in 24.56 seconds, and the 100 freestyle in 53.95. She also swam legs on the Arrows’ winning efforts in the 200 and 400 freestyle relay events.

Other double winners in TRAC girls individual races were Clay sophomore Joslyn Jurski (200 freestyle in 1:57.74; 500 freestyle, 5:21.69), and Ross senior Alexis Prenzlin (200 IM, 2:09.92; 100 breaststroke, 1:03.87).

St. Ursula’s other race winners were junior Corinne Staneart (100 butterfly, 1:00.25) and sophomore Mia Cheatwood (100 backstroke, 1:00.80). Staneart and Cheatwood also swam on two of the Arrows’ winning relay efforts.

The other boys individual event winners were St. John’s Jesuit junior Jack Van Cott in the 100 breaststroke (59.66) and Findlay senior Graham Hartman, who won the one-meter diving competition with 312.65 points.

Rounding out the girls events winners was Notre Dame junior Katherine Stapleton, who won the one-meter diving with 357.0 points.

It was St. Ursula’s third straight TRAC team title and its fourth overall since the conference swim meet began in 2012.

MORE SWIMMING

A week earlier at Bowling Green State University, the Napoleon boys and Perrysburg girls won team titles in the Northern Lakes League swimming and diving meet.

The Wildcat boys rolled up 313 points to top runner-up Perrysburg (259) and third-place Anthony Wayne (241). Perrysburg’s girls won their meet with 350 points, and Napoleon and AW tied for second at 217 points.

The NLL boys meet had three double winners in individual events, including Napoleon sophomore Kyle Hudson, who took titles in the 100-yard freestyle (47.64 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (53.40).

The other doubles came from Southview senior Isaac Grinberg taking the 50-yard freestyle in 21.98 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 51.94, and Bowling Green senior C.J. Layne won the 200 individual medley in 1:59.93, and the 100 breaststroke in 57.78.

Other boys individual event winners were Napoleon senior Levi Spring (500 freestyle, 5:03.84), and Anthony Wayne junior Will LaMastus (200 freestyle, 1:50.72).

In boys relay events, AW won the 200 medley, Perrysburg took the 200 freestyle, and Napoleon captured the 400 freestyle.

The NLL girls meet also produced three double winners in individual competition — including Perrysburg sophomore Julia Beer (200 IM, 2:10.40; 100 butterfly, 59.11), Yellow Jackets freshman Elise Randolph (500 freestyle, 5:19.31; 100 breaststroke, 1:08.13), and Napoleon junior Kaylee Nagel (50 freestyle, 24.51; 100 freestyle, 53.46).

Both of Beer’s wins set league records, as did Nagel’s time in the 100 freestyle race.

The other girls swimmers to take titles were Perrysburg junior Kath Fisher (200 freestyle, 1:58.59) and AW junior Maddie Blakely (100 backstroke, 1:00.57).

Perrysburg swept the three girls relay events.

In NLL one-meter diving competition held Jan. 9 at Napoleon, Northview junior George Peuhl won the boys title with 399.05 points, and Anthony Wayne senior Grace Ellis won the girls crown with 410.70 points.
