Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski, at the end of Tuesday’s meeting, announced it would officially be his last.

The Republican District 5 councilman is leaving to take a job with University of Toledo as director of local relations in the university’s government relations office. He is term-limited and could not run for re-election.

Early voting is under way for the Nov. 5 general election, in which voters will decide whether Republican Tom Names or Democrat Sam Melden will be the new District 5 councilman.

Because Mr. Waniewski will be leaving before his term expires at the end of the year, city council must appoint someone to serve until either Mr. Melden or Mr. Names is sworn in in January.

They have 30 days from the day of the vacancy to make the appointment, according to Toledo City Charter. Council President Matt Cherry called a special meeting for 1:59 p.m. Oct. 22 for a possible vote on Mr. Waniewski’s replacement.

The Lucas County Democratic Party last week endorsed political newcomer Katie Bibish Moline, 35, an accountant and Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce board member, to receive the appointment.

The endorsement doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll get the nod from council, as other interested candidates may come forward.
