An Ohio Department of Natural Resources district manager will provide more details next week about wetlands being built or enhanced under the DeWine administration’s H2Ohio program.

Scott Butterworth is to speak at the monthly Lake Erie Waterkeeper meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at Manos Greek Restaurant, 1701 Adams St. It is open to the public.

The DeWine administration has announced plans to spend $46 million on new wetlands or marsh improvements in 2020 to help combat toxic algal blooms that have fouled parts of western Lake Erie nearly every summer since 1995. Often called nature’s kidneys, wetlands are seen as a potential management tool because of their ability to filter out algae-forming nutrients such as phosphorus.

H2Ohio is a statewide water-improvement program. Many of the wetlands projects being planned now are in northwest Ohio.
