Three of the four defendants accused of participating in two fatal May shootings pleaded not guilty Thursday to their multiple charges.

Anthony Anderson, 21, of the 1800 block of Perth Street, and Thomas Savage IV, 19, of the 1100 block of Pinewood Avenue, were each indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on two counts of murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, and felonious assault, all with gun specifications, for their roles in the May 13 shooting of 47-year-old Leonard Tucker and the May 19 shooting of 20-year-old Daishawn Watson.

Co-defendants Harvey Townsend, Jr., 28, of the 2900 block of Albion Street, and DeVaughn Jones, 21, of the 2000 block of Berkshire Place, were also indicted. They are each charged with two counts of improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation, both with a gun and firearm from a motor vehicle specification. Mr. Townsend faces an additional charge of improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

Mr. Anderson and Savage appeared in orange jumpsuits and shackles in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Thursday before Judge Joe McNamara. Attorney Ronnie Wingate was previously appointed to represent Mr. Anderson when he was first indicted for the May 13 shooting, and James Neumeyer was appointed to represent Savage for a previous case.

In the middle of their hearing, Mr. Townsend walked into the courtroom, where he also was arraigned and represented by Mr. Wingate.

The three defendants entered not guilty pleas to all of their charges.

Mr. Anderson and Savage are accused of targeting a home in the 1300 block of Buckingham Street on May 13 that led to the fatal shooting of Mr. Tucker. Mr. Tucker was at the residence during the robbery and as he was trying to get out, he was fatally shot, according to Toledo police.

On May 19, Mr. Anderson drove in a vehicle with Mr. Watson and Savage when they got into an altercation with another group near Nebraska Avenue and Miller Street. The groups began shooting at each other. During the incident, Savage shot Mr. Watson, police said.

Savage exited the vehicle and fled, while Mr. Anderson drove Mr. Watson to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Following that incident, Savage met Mr. Townsend and Mr. Jones. The three drove to a residence in the area of Buckingham and Vance streets to shoot at a residence in retaliation for what happened to Mr. Watson, according to police.

Police later stopped the suspects’ vehicle and the three defendants fled from the car. Police located a .22-caliber Ruger rifle in the vehicle.

While some of the defendants were previously indicted on charges relating to the same incident, those counts have since been dismissed and re-indicted under a single, consolidated case. Judge McNamara continued any previously set bonds, but set bond amounts on any additional charges after the grand jury considered the case last week.

An aggregate bond for Savage was set at $2.4 million; bond for Mr. Anderson was a total of $2.25; and surety bond previously posted for Mr. Townsend was continued.

Jones has not been taken into custody in regard to this case as of Thursday afternoon, according to records.

Should either Savage of Mr. Anderson post bond, Judge McNamara ordered they be placed on electronic monitoring.

The three defendants are scheduled to appear for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 5.
