Moving pictures: Cars, planes the focus of exhibition

Local art exhibits worth checking out.

The Perrysburg Municipal Public Art Exhibit series and curator Main ART-ery has opened an exhibition of work by a local artist that includes his signature classic car and airplane pieces, as well as autographed paintings.

Michael Goettner: A Solo Exhibit, includes two watercolor paintings signed by race car drivers: Sweet 16 is signed by drivers Danika Patrick and Bobby Rahal, and Ground Level Flight is signed by Italian supercar legends Marie Terese Lamborghini, Claudio Zampoli, and Valentino Balboni.

Goettner’s work has been exhibited at automobile events and in art and automobile museums, including the Automobile Hall of Fame and Jay Leno’s Museums, and has been featured in publications that include Motor Trend and Automobile.

The public can view the work 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until Dec. 20 at 201 W. Indiana Ave. The show is curated by Main ART-ery.

■ This weekend marks one of two Maker’s Mart indie craft fair events every year at Handmade Toledo on Adams Street.

The indie craft fair features about 75 artists who sell hand-crafted creations at the event to community members looking for unique wares. The event is held every May before Mother’s Day and then again in November and will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the store.

■ An exhibition that highlights its Native American art collection and includes new acquisitions opens next month at the Toledo Museum of Art.

Expanded Views II: Native American Art in Focus opens Dec. 5 and will run an entire year. The show includes three new acquisitions by the museum: Beauty in Dreams (2019), a beaded bag by Ken Williams, Jr. (Arapaho/Seneca); San Ildefonso Polychrome Storage Jar (c. 1902-1910), Native clay, pigment attributed to Martina Vigil and Florentino Montoya (San Ildefonso), and Swept Away (2016), a handwoven basket by Shan Goshorn (American, Eastern Band Cherokee).

The show will also include a rotating collection of Navajo textile masterworks on loan from the Crane Collection at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The first Expanded Views show was installed at the museum last year. This free show includes some of those same works, including the large-scale installation Tiichum (2013) by artist James Lavadour.

■ There are several art shows at some of the area’s library branches that visitors can check out along with books.

At the Maumee branch, there is a show through Thursday of artwork by clients of Bittersweet Farms, which serves adults and adolescents on the autism spectrum. Also at the Maumee branch opening Friday is an exhibit of work by abstract artist Amy Renee. That show remains on view through Dec. 31.

Visitors to the Sanger Branch Library, 3030 Central Ave., can view the paintings of local artist Anne Abate and the jewelry of Jaci Riley. Both shows are open through the end of the month.

■ The Toledo Artists Club has two more gallery exhibitions this year before kicking off its 2020 monthly shows.

People & Portrait is open at the club’s gallery, inside Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Drive, through Nov. 26. The December exhibition, with a winter theme, is open Dec. 3-19.

Also upcoming at the Artist Village in the gardens is Heralding the Holidays, this year scheduled for Dec. 6-8.

The annual event features shopping for locally created art at the village’s studios, including works by potters, glassblowers, painters, garden clubs, stained glass artists, fiber artists, photographers, jewelers and rock and gem enthusiasts, weavers, and artists at Unruly Arts.

Visitors can blow a glass ornament for $25, and there will be food, drink, and holiday carolers. The event is from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 8.
